How ICSE Geography Builds the Foundation Year
In ICSE, History, Civics & Geography is a single subject examined as two papers. Geography is Paper 2, and Class 9 lays the foundation for the Class 10 board paper that follows.
The Class 9 syllabus concentrates on the principles of geography — the Earth as a planet, the geographic grid and time, the structure of the Earth, the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, pollution and the natural regions of the world — closing with map work on an outline map of the world.
Candidates are expected to make fullest use of sketches, diagrams, graphs and charts in their answers. This page shows EduMagik's stepped reasoning approach with a worked demonstration question: a clue first, then a full step-by-step solution.

The official Paper 2 syllabus — the principles of geography, closing with map work
Principles of Geography
-
Ch 1
Our World
The Earth as a planet; the geographic grid — latitudes and longitudes, the Prime Meridian, GMT, time zones, the International Date Line and the calculation of time; and rotation and revolution with their effects (day and night, seasons, equinoxes and solstices).
-
Ch 2
Structure of the Earth
The Earth's structure (core, mantle, crust); landforms (mountains, plateaus, plains); rocks and the rock cycle; volcanoes and earthquakes; and weathering and denudation by rivers and wind.
-
Ch 3
Hydrosphere
The meaning of the hydrosphere; tides — their formation and pattern; and ocean currents — their circulation and effects (Gulf Stream, North Atlantic Drift, Labrador, Kuroshio and Oyashio).
-
Ch 4
Atmosphere
The composition and structure of the atmosphere; ozone depletion and global warming; insolation; atmospheric pressure and the world wind systems (permanent, periodic, local and variable winds, jet streams); and humidity, condensation and rainfall.
-
Ch 5
Pollution
Air, water, soil, radiation and noise pollution — types, sources, effects on the environment and human health, and preventive measures.
-
Ch 6
Natural Regions of the World
The location, climate, natural vegetation and human adaptation of the equatorial, tropical grassland, tropical desert, tropical monsoon, Mediterranean, temperate grassland, taiga and tundra regions.
Map Work
-
Ch 7
Map Work (Outline Map of the World)
Locating, marking and naming the major natural regions, oceans, seas, gulfs and straits, major rivers, and the principal mountains and plateaus of the world.
The Earth rotates through 360° in 24 hours. Through how many degrees of longitude does it rotate in one hour?
Reasoning Clue & Solution
Divide the total rotation (360°) by the number of hours the Earth takes to complete it.
The EduMagik 3-Step Hint Ladder
Point to the Method
Names the calculation to reach for (e.g. "Divide the total degrees by the hours") without giving the answer.
Guided Reasoning Prompt
Prompts the key step (e.g. "What is 360 divided by 24?").
Complete Worked Solution
Shows the full working and explains why the answer is correct.
How to Revise Class 9 Geography
Simple, high-impact ways to prepare for the ICSE foundation year
Draw Everything
The paper rewards sketches and diagrams — practise drawing winds, river landforms, rock cycle and pressure belts so a labelled diagram does the explaining for you.
Master the Grid
Get fluent with latitude, longitude and the 15°-per-hour time rule — these calculations appear often and are quick marks once the method is automatic.
Learn Regions as a Set
For each natural region, revise location, climate, vegetation and human adaptation together as one package so comparisons come easily.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is covered in ICSE Class 9 Geography?
The principles of geography — Our World (the geographic grid and time, rotation and revolution), the Structure of the Earth, the Hydrosphere, the Atmosphere, Pollution and the Natural Regions of the World — plus map work on an outline map of the world. Always confirm the current syllabus with CISCE or your school.
How is ICSE Class 9 Geography examined?
As Paper 2 of the History, Civics & Geography subject: one 2-hour written paper of 80 marks, plus 20 marks of internal assessment for practical/project work — totalling 100.
Is Geography a separate subject in ICSE?
History, Civics & Geography is a single ICSE subject examined as two papers — History & Civics is Paper 1 and Geography is Paper 2. This page covers Paper 2 for Class 9.
Are diagrams and maps important in the Geography paper?
Yes. CISCE states that candidates are expected to make fullest use of sketches, diagrams, graphs and charts, and some questions may require interpreting photographs of geographical interest.
