Why Class 9 Maths Sets Up the ICSE Board Year

ICSE Mathematics is a two-year course across Classes 9 and 10. The ICSE board paper is taken at the end of Class 10, but almost everything it tests rests on the foundations laid in Class 9 — so this year matters more than its school-level marks suggest.

The CISCE syllabus for Class 9 covers eight topics: Pure Arithmetic, Commercial Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, Mensuration, Trigonometry and Coordinate Geometry. Each is assessed on the same 80 + 20 pattern — a 2½-hour paper of 80 marks plus 20 marks of internal assessment.

This page shows EduMagik's stepped reasoning approach with a worked demonstration question: a clue first, then a full step-by-step solution, so the method is understood rather than just the answer.

The Eight CISCE Mathematics Topics (ICSE Class 9)

The official CISCE syllabus lists eight topics — grouped here by theme

Arithmetic & Commercial Mathematics

  • Ch 1 Pure Arithmetic

Rational and irrational numbers as real numbers; surds and rationalising the denominator; representation on the number line; and proofs of the irrationality of √2, √3 and √5.

  • Ch 2 Commercial Mathematics

Compound interest as repeated simple interest with a growing principal; using the formula A = P(1 + r/100)ⁿ and CI = A − P; half-yearly compounding; and rate of growth and depreciation.

Algebra

  • Ch 3 Algebra

Expansions and factorisation; simultaneous linear equations in two variables (elimination, substitution, cross-multiplication); indices and laws of exponents; and logarithms with their laws and uses.

Geometry & Mensuration

  • Ch 4 Geometry

Congruency of triangles (SSS, SAS, AAS, RHS); the mid-point and equal-intercept theorems; Pythagoras theorem; rectilinear figures and properties of parallelograms; and chord and arc properties of circles.

  • Ch 6 Mensuration

Area and perimeter of triangles (including Heron’s formula) and quadrilaterals; area and circumference of a circle; and surface area and volume of cubes and cuboids.

Trigonometry & Coordinate Geometry

  • Ch 7 Trigonometry

Trigonometric ratios and their reciprocals; ratios of standard angles (0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 90°); simple 2-D problems on one right-angled triangle; and complementary-angle ratios.

  • Ch 8 Coordinate Geometry

The Cartesian system and plotting points; dependent and independent variables; solving simultaneous linear equations graphically; and the distance formula.

Statistics

  • Ch 5 Statistics

Collection, tabulation and graphical representation of data; raw, arrayed and grouped data; class intervals, boundaries and frequency tables; mean and median of ungrouped data; and drawing a frequency polygon.

Demonstration Question (Based on the CISCE ICSE Mathematics syllabus)

A sum of ₹8,000 is invested at 10% per annum compound interest, compounded annually, for 2 years. What is the compound interest earned?

A. ₹1,600
B. ₹1,680 ✓ Correct
C. ₹1,800
D. ₹9,680

Reasoning Clue & Solution

Use A = P(1 + r/100)ⁿ to find the amount first, then the interest is CI = A − P. Do not confuse the final amount with the interest.

The EduMagik 3-Step Hint Ladder

1

Point to the Method

Names the tool to reach for (e.g. "Use A = P(1 + r/100)ⁿ") without giving the answer.

2

Guided Reasoning Prompt

Prompts the key step (e.g. "Is the question asking for the amount or just the interest?").

3

Complete Worked Solution

Shows the full step-by-step working and explains why the answer is correct.

How to Revise Class 9 Maths

Simple, high-impact ways to build strong foundations

Master the Basics Before the Board Year

Class 10 assumes Class 9 algebra, geometry and trigonometry — close every gap now while there is time.

Keep a Clean Working Method

Set out each step of a numerical or proof clearly; ICSE rewards method and correct units, not just the final answer.

Take Internal Assessment Seriously

Internal assessment is 20 marks from your assignments — neat, well-reasoned work genuinely lifts the overall grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What topics are in the ICSE Class 9 Maths syllabus?

The CISCE syllabus lists eight topics: Pure Arithmetic, Commercial Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, Mensuration, Trigonometry and Coordinate Geometry. Always confirm the current syllabus with CISCE or your school.

How is ICSE Class 9 Maths assessed?

By one 2½-hour written paper of 80 marks covering the syllabus, plus 20 marks of internal assessment (a minimum of two assignments set through the year) — totalling 100.

Is Class 9 Maths an ICSE board exam?

No. The ICSE (CISCE) board examination is taken at the end of Class 10. Class 9 is the first year of the two-year course and is assessed at school level on the same 80 + 20 pattern.

Can a calculator or mathematical tables be used?

The syllabus notes that some questions may require mathematical tables (logarithmic and trigonometric). Follow your school’s and CISCE’s current instructions on tables and calculators for each paper.
