What JEE Advanced Is and How It Is Examined
JEE Advanced is the entrance examination for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). According to the official 2026 Information Brochure, it consists of two question papers — Paper 1 and Paper 2 — each of three hours’ duration, and appearing in both papers is compulsory.
The exam is conducted only in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. Each paper has three separate sections — Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — and the questions are designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability. Negative marks may be awarded for incorrect answers on some questions.
The brochure states that the detailed marking scheme and the exact question types are given in the “Instructions to Candidates” shown at the time of the examination, so these are set each year — always confirm the current scheme on the official JEE Advanced website. This page covers the official syllabus and pattern only; the three subject pages carry the full Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics syllabi.
JEE Advanced Syllabus by Subject
Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — each paper tests all three
Physics
General measurement and error analysis, Mechanics, Thermal Physics, Electricity & Magnetism, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics and Modern Physics.

The official 2026 brochure states that negative marks may be awarded for incorrect answers on some questions, and that the detailed marking scheme is provided in the “Instructions to Candidates” at the time of the examination. The exact marks and negative-marking rules are set each year and announced in the exam-day instructions, so always confirm the current scheme on the official JEE Advanced website. If a question is dropped, full marks for it are awarded to all candidates.
How to Prepare for JEE Advanced
General preparation milestones built around the official syllabus (always confirm the current scheme)
Master the Syllabus
- ✓Cover every Physics, Chemistry and Maths unit in the official Annexure-I syllabus
- ✓Build fluency in high-yield areas: Mechanics, Organic Chemistry and Calculus
- ✓Link concepts across subjects — e.g. calculus used in kinematics and kinetics
Develop Reasoning
- ✓Practise comprehension, reasoning and analytical problems, not just recall
- ✓Work multi-step problems that combine two or more topics
- ✓Learn to read each question type and its on-screen answer format
Exam Readiness
- ✓Take computer-based mock tests to get used to the CBT interface
- ✓Practise pacing across two 3-hour papers taken on the same day
- ✓Confirm the current year’s marking scheme and question types before the exam
A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 2 m/s² for 5 s. What distance does it cover in this time?
Reasoning Clue & Solution
Use the equation of motion s = ut + ½at². The car starts from rest, so the initial velocity u = 0.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many papers are there in JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced has two papers — Paper 1 and Paper 2 — each of three hours’ duration, and appearing in both is compulsory. Each paper has three sections: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
What is the JEE Advanced exam pattern?
It is a Computer Based Test (CBT) only. Both papers test Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with questions designed to assess comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability. Negative marks may apply to some questions. The detailed marking scheme and exact question types are given in the exam-day “Instructions to Candidates” and are set each year.
What subjects are in the JEE Advanced syllabus?
Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The full unit-by-unit syllabus for each is published in Annexure-I of the JEE Advanced Information Brochure — see the three subject pages linked above.
What is the difference between JEE Advanced and JEE Main?
JEE Main is conducted by the NTA and is the qualifying exam; JEE Advanced is conducted by the IITs for admission to the IITs. Indian nationals must be among the top-ranked candidates in JEE Main to be eligible for JEE Advanced. The two exams have separate syllabi and patterns.
